We’re looking for a motivated Senior/Intermediate Accountant

Kia titi ki te ngākau // Impact

Are you ready for more?

Ake is a modern, energetic firm where Māori cultural values are at the heart of our mahi. We are driven by the knowledge that the work we do makes a meaningful difference for our clients & their whānau - not just today but in the long-term.

We’re looking for a new Senior/Intermediate-level Accountant to join our welcoming team. This is a flexible role, with an option to be based out of Whakatāne or Tauranga. If you are an experienced professional wondering “where to next?”, Ake offers a real opportunity for both career growth and to become more aligned with what’s most important to you.

About us

Ake’s kaupapa is guided by our whakatauki “Te Whakaoho i te Pito Mata”, which translates as “unlocking potential.” We do this by working in trusted partnership with our clients, providing the financial tools, coaching, and planning needed to achieve their aspirations.

We’re also here to support our own team to unlock their potential. We encourage professional development, and want to help you grow into your desired future role.

Developing that potential also means taking into account your whole picture. One of our core values, for ourselves and our clients, is mauri tau. This is about achieving balance and harmony - between our mahi, whānau time and personal wellbeing.

We’re big on making the most of the latest technology & software to work smarter, and deliver better outcomes for our clients. We were proud to be nominated for The Gap Innovation Award in 2023.

The role

Our clients include individuals, businesses, iwi and hapū organisations, family, farming, and Ahu Whenua trusts located in the Bay of Plenty and beyond.

You’ll have your own client base to manage, with a diverse mix of client sizes and entity types. You’ll work to develop a strong relationship with each client, and become a trusted advisor. Your work will include:

  • Overseeing production of annual accounts and tax returns

  • Providing business growth advice to clients

  • Preparing cashflow forecasts and management reports

  • Preparing financial statements and income tax returns

  • Preparing FBT, GST and PAYE returns

  • Assisting clients with Xero set up and queries

  • Mentoring and supporting our junior team members

  • Helping us to develop and grow Ake through the ongoing refinement of our systems and technology

About you

We are looking for someone who will bring energy, experience and a commitment to delivering excellence. Attributes we’re looking for are:

  • Preferably a Chartered Accountant (however this is not essential)

  • A minimum of 3 years in a public practice

  • Strong knowledge of the NZ tax system

  • Confident in using a range of software. We use Xero, The Gap, Content Snare, FYI Docs to name a few - it’s not essential that you’ve used them all, but you’ll be tech-savvy enough to pick them up quickly.

  • A clear communicator who genuinely enjoys getting to know our clients

  • Experience in business advisory, or a desire to grow your advisory skills

  • Highly organised & deadline-focused

  • If you have knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Te Ao Māori that would be an advantage, or be someone who is open to learning more in this area

How to apply

If you would like to work for a firm dedicated to helping whānau, businesses and Māori organisations thrive, today and for generations to come - we would love to hear from you.
