Māori Authorities

If you have a Māori land trust and will be earning income, you may wish to register as a Māori Authority.

The Ake team have extensive experience in helping whānau and Trusts set up and administer Māori Authorities, as well as managing tax obligations in a cost-effective and efficient manner.

How a Māori authority works:

A Māori authority acts as a trustee by administering communally owned Māori property on behalf of individual members.

Māori authorities file annual returns, have a reduced tax rate and special rules around taxation. They must also maintain a Māori authority credit account (MACA). This account records how much income tax it has paid, and how many tax credits are available to pass on to its members.

How we can help:

We can assist you every step of the way - right from advising on what set up is best for your Trust through to documentation, filing annual returns and administering your account with the IRD.

If you are a Māori authority or are wondering if this might be a good option for your Trust, please get in touch to book a no obligation meeting.
